I'm Off To See The Wizards

I'll be hopping on a plane later this evening to head out to the midwest for my first grad school "visiting day." I'm pretty nervous, mostly about staying in a complete stranger's home for two nights...lol.

Any last minute advice? I think I figured out the clothing situation. For my first meet & greet with Potential Advisor and fellow applicants tonight (which is right after I get off the plane), I'm going Dr. Isis-style in a nice pair of jeans, boots, and a waist-length blazer with Awesome Scarf. Tomorrow I'm doing dress pants, turtleneck, boots, and Awesome Scarf.

I'm printing all of my application materials including my personal statement so that I have copies with me, several copies of my updated CV, copy of Potential Advisor's Major Article with my comments and questions in the margins, and I think that's it. Did I forget anything?

I don't expect to be accessing the web, but I will get blog comments and emails via my Almost IPhone.

I'll be back Saturday afternoon with full updates and details!

The only piece of advice I have is to try to get some one-on-one time with the graduate students to get the real dirt on the lab/department.

Good luck! You'll kick butt!

Absolutely I second talking to grad students 1 on 1 to get the real scoop. And be sure to find out what grants your potential advisor has if you haven't already, and how many papers you can expect to publish each year working there. Crucial info to your ability to get jobs afterwards!

Have a safe trip.

I never had to take out my CVs or my application materials at any of my visits but it's good to have because it makes you feel prepared.

Having one on one time w/ the grad students is super important, as is paying attention to the way people in the department interact with one another.

Can't wait to hear all about it.
