The university I am faculty at rejected me as a fucking undergrad. The majority of my successful colleagues either were or would have been as well. Just sayin' that what makes people appealing to admission committees is not necessarily what is most important for long-term success in academia.
Haha - similar to PP's experience, I was rejected from the same school TWICE when I applied to their undergrad program ... but they welcomed me with open arms when I applied to grad school, gave me a couple of awards, tried to entice me to stay when I got my PhD and, just last week, they were begging me to maintain my adjunct faculty status with them.
Take whichever grad school opportunity suits you best and your career will skyrocket from there.
You know, I didn't get into my first or second choice (for undergrad) and it turned out that my third choice (where I did get in) ended up being a much better place for me than the others anyway.
Of course you're not a reject - what have we all been trying to tell you for the last few weeks?
You're awesome, and this school has the clarity to see it - congrats again!
I unfortunately have no useful story about being rejected as an undergrad/gradstudent but accepted as etc... but I know for shit certain that I would have been rejected as both an undergrad and a grad student at my postdoc institution and yet still got a totally awesome postdoc opportunity there (which was much more valuable to me than either undergrad or grad would have been). My undergrad and grad experiences were what made that happen. So, like they said: the things you think aren't what you want might turn out to be just perfect.
Thanks everyone! It feels really, really good to know that someone wants me in their program. Now I'm focusing on the logistics of actually going there, and still waiting to hear from program #3.
have some beers, kick back and know that you ARE wanted. climate transition isn't easy, i went from very cold to very hot. but that's no sweat. well, it is a lot of sweat. but you know what i mean.
I'm a twenty-something new mom living in New England. My son D was born in June of 2010. My blog has a LOT of different topics on it - grad school admissions, psychology, books, travel, fashion, cooking, etc., but mommyhood seems to dominate my interests these days.
I haven't decided yet if I want to continue the pseudonymity or just "come out" on this blog since burning bridges to grad school is no longer an issue. We'll see how it goes - I do still work, ya know!
